The greatest athletes of all time

Throughout history, sports have given us countless memories and been an eternal source of admiration, fascination, and gathering. The greatest legends of sports have contributed to the myth of sport; they have not only been outstanding athletes but also icons, idols, and political fighters. Among them, we can mention Muhammad Ali, the greatest heavyweight champion of all time, who became the face of the black rights movement in the USA and won his titles in the 60s and 70s among some of history's best boxers; or Pelé, who is classically regarded as the best football player with over 1,200 goals scored and who led Brazil to 3 World Cup triumphs in the 1950s, 60s, and 70s; or Michael Jordan, the basketball legend of them all, who dominated an entire sport for more than a decade with 6 NBA titles to follow. Additionally, of course, sports also include countless iconic athletes whom we celebrate at THE PLAY®.

Danish moments in sports

Although Denmark is a small nation, we have made significant marks in sports history: Denmark's Euro triumph in 1992 is one of the biggest sensations ever in international football, and virtually all Danes who experienced the summer of '92 can remember where they were on June 26 when Denmark defeated the defending world champions from Germany 2-0; the monumental victories of the women's handball team at the World Cup, European Championships, and 3 times at the Olympics between 1993 and 2004, which truly kicked off a Danish era in handball; and not least in the world of athletics, where Kenyan-born Wilson Kipketer dominated the sport for an entire decade, set numerous world records in the 800 meters, and put Denmark on the winner's podium at events such as the World Championships (gold, 1995 and 1997) and the Olympics (silver, 1996). Kipketer is the second-fastest man in history over 800 meters outdoors, but an all-time greatest over 800 meters indoors.
